Foreign Language, the Arts, and Music

Flagstaff Academy, as a science and technology-focused school, understand the importance of a well-rounded education. We pride ourselves on a robust and integrated foreign language and arts program that enriches the learning experience for every student, at every level.

The Arts

Flagstaff Academy's Fine Arts and Music program is firmly rooted in Core Knowledge Sequence.

Students have a direct experience that fosters exploration and discovery, with hands-on, authentic experiences that have included African & Australian rock art, the Middle Ages, the Renaissance, Modern Art and much more.

Our Middle School art essentials/electives offer students opportunities to explore different types of drawing, painting, watercolors, digital photography, and more

Flagstaff Academy participates in the St. Vrain Valley School District's annual art show and many of our students' work has been recognized with top honors.

Our music program provides all students the opportunity to sing, play, move, listen and create. A variety of topics are covered at each level including musical elements, composers and multicultural music. Recorders are introduced in third grade and beginning woodwind, brass and percussion are offered in fourth grade. Beginning band is available to fourth and fifth grade students with multiple performance opportunties.

At the Middle School level, Flagstaff Academy's music program includes beginning, intermediate, and advanced band, Jazz band, and choir. The advanced band performed at the 2016 Colorado League of Charter School's annual conference and was one of only two middle school bands invited to participate at the 2016 St. Vrain Valley School District's Music and Choir Festival, held at Silver Creek High School.

Flagstaff Academy's middle school Language Arts program has had a decade long partnership with the Colorado Shakespeare Festival's "Shakespeare and Violence Prevention" program, who performs anti-bullying themed pieces and holds workshops for the students. Our 8th graders were recently featured in one of the Colorado Shakespeare Festival's anti-bullying videos

Foreign Languages

The Spanish Program at Flagstaff Academy is designed to foster students' enthusiasm for the Spanish language and its cultures, and is introduced in fourth grade with instruction centering on learning basic vocabulary in the target language, with fifth and sixth grade working toward oral and written fluency, using the Santillana, Level 1 program and Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling (TPRS). Spanish is offered as an essentia/elective in Middle School, which at its completion, is the equivalent of what is being taught at the district high schools' freshman year.

Throughout the program students are also taught about cultural aspects and celebrations of Hispanic countries, bringing to light the significance of our ever-increasing global community. In this manner, the average Flagstaff graduate is well-prepared to enter high school at the sophomore, Spanish II level.

For the 2016-2017 school year, we are excited to be expanding our foreign languages offerings with a French Language Middle School essential/elective.
