6th Grade Language Arts Syllabus

- Ms. Moskoff’s Classroom Policies and Syllabus  -

2023-24

Welcome back students and welcome to 6th Grade Language Arts!  I am very excited for this school year. Below you will find relevant information for Language Arts.  Your first grade will be to get the final page of the syllabus signed and returned by Monday August 28, 2023

The mission of the Sixth Grade Team is to provide space for students to grow and thrive academically, socially and emotionally. We strive to instill a desire for lifelong learning and a willingness to approach challenges with an open mind and the tools to problem solve. Through practical experiences, hands-on learning, and rigorous instruction we will challenge students academically and intellectually. Through our Compass course and Advisory periods we will cover the essential habits and character development that will give students the skills to function as leaders and exemplars of good decision-making.  We will work collaboratively with students, families and the rest of the Flagstaff team to help and encourage students to become responsible citizens with strong skills and respectful habits.

Dragon PRIDE

    • Students are expected to show their PRIDE everyday!
  • P: Perseverance
  • R: Respect
  • I: Integrity
  • D: Dependability
  • E: Empathy

Guidelines and Expectations:

    • What you need to bring to class with you on a daily basis:
      • Writing Utensils (pens, pencils, highlighters)
      • Your Language Arts composition notebook (will be stored in the classroom)
      • Your planner and expandable
      • Your FULLY CHARGED Chromebook
      • Your earbuds
      • An SSR book
      • A good attitude that includes the 4 Agreements
    • The 4 Agreements: Be impeccable with your word, Don’t take anything personally, Don’t make assumptions, and Always do your best.
  • Calm Strips:  Stickers with textured surfaces have been placed on all desks. These are fidgets and anxiety-reducing tools that belong to the classroom, not you. All Calm Strips must remain on the desks. Removal will result in a conversation with you and your parent(s).
  • It is okay, and encouraged, for you to disagree
    • One of the greatest, most wonderful aspects of literature is that it can mean something different to every person who reads it. There is no right or wrong answer when it comes to talking about and analyzing literature and stories. That being said, differing views and opinions are encouraged, and respect for those opinions is required.
  • Communication is key in a successful and productive classroom.  I am committed to communicating with you my expectations, assignments and due dates, and any changes that may come up.  I am also committed to communicating with your parents when they need to be involved.  It is YOUR responsibility to communicate with me when questions arise or conflicts ensue.  I am here to help you, but am unable to do so if you keep your thoughts to yourself.  Know that I am available to chat during, before, and after school, passing periods, during your lunch/recess, and always through email.
  • Newsletter will be emailed home weekly which will include a weekly overview and upcoming assessments as well as grade specific notices.

Grading Scale and Homework Policy:

A=91-100%

B=81-90%

C=71-80%

D=61-70%

F=60 & below

  • Utilize your planner! You need to have it everyday when you come to class.  No matter how fantastic your memory is, you are required to write assignments in your planner.
  • Homework and Assessment Policy: Assignment descriptions and due dates are entered into Infinite Campus as well as Google Classroom..
  • Late homework (Learning Activities):  The expectation is that students are meeting deadlines by turning work in on time.  However, we understand that life happens.  Students may turn in assignments up to two weeks after their due date, or until the end of the unit, whichever comes first. Missing equals a zero in Infinite Campus and will be changed from a Missing to a zero after two weeks.  Students are required to email the teacher when they have turned in late assignments, or the assignment may not be graded.
  • Student Initials: I have read and understand the assessment and grading policy. _______

  • Parent Initials: I have read and understand the assessment and grading policy. ________

Classroom Routines and Expectations:

  • Use of Technology
    • Students will use technology everyday in Language Arts.   If you forget your Chromebook or it is inoperable, you are still expected to complete the work, typically by hand.
    • Some assignments will be “collected” electronically, however, some assignments will need to be printed.  If you are unable to print from home, you must email me the document and politely ask that I print it for you.  I will only print requests that are received by midnight the night before an assignment is due.
    • Several resources are in use, including Google Apps (Docs, Sheets, Forms, and Presentations), Infographics, No Red Ink, Education Portal, BrainPop, and many others. With the use of technology comes the expected responsibility.  Chromebooks are for academic purposes, and should be viewed and utilized as an integral tool in student’s tool kits. If students are not using this technology appropriately, they will lose the privilege. Be sure to have your Chromebook charged!
  • Google Classroom:
    • Each class period has a Classroom through Google.  This Classroom contains any and all resources used in class (presentations, notes, assignment descriptions, etc.).  You  have access to this folder at all times, as it is shared with you. Your parents will also receive updates on missing work. The majority of assignments will be found in your Classroom and will need to be turned in through the Classroom.
  • Absence:
    • Homework is posted on Infinite Campus and in Google Classroom.
  • It is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to find out what you missed if you were absent.  Most everything is available online EVERYDAY.  Please don’t ask if you missed anything important; every day is important.  Extra copies of in class papers are found in the hanging file in my classroom.  You are responsible for checking there in the event of an absence. You receive 2 extra days for each day you are absent to complete your work. If you do not complete that work, it will go into IC as missing.
  • Tardiness Policy: Tardiness will not be tolerated.  When you come to class late, it is a distraction.  If you are coming from another teacher, please get a pass from that teacher.  Tardiness is recorded on Infinite Campus, so your parents will see this.
    • Bathroom: Class time is for learning.  There will be certain times during the lesson when you will not be permitted to use the bathroom.  Please use the passing periods to do your business whenever possible and always remember to wash your hands.  If it is a bathroom emergency during class, you will sign in and out of the classroom.  ONE student excused at a time.
  • Library:  I have a private selection of books that you are encouraged to borrow for your own reading enjoyment.  All books must be signed out and then signed back in when returned.  Failure to return books will result in your financial responsibility for replacements.
  • Class Cup:  Each Language Arts class will compete for highest points earned in a grading quarter.  Classes will earn points by going above and beyond expectations. The winning class will earn a party at the end of the quarter.
