Flagstaff Academy Charter School opened its doors on its 20th year of operation, marking two decades of academic innovation, community engagement, and student-centered learning. Since its founding in 2005, Flagstaff Academy has grown from a small, hopeful charter to Longmont’s premier tuition-free public charter school, now serving nearly 800 students and employing close to 100 dedicated teachers and staff.
“This milestone is a testament to our enduring commitment to student success and whole-child education,” said Executive Principal Katie Gustafson. “Flagstaff Academy began with a bold vision to do education differently—and better—for our community. Today, that vision is alive and thriving thanks to the hard work of our educators, families, and students.”
One of the school’s longest-standing staff members, Registrar Sheila Strukel, has been part of Flagstaff Academy’s journey since day one. “I’ve had the privilege of watching this school grow from a student population of just over 220 to Longmont’s largest charter school serving more than 720 students,” Strukel shared. “It’s been an incredible experience to see our school and students flourish year after year.”
Adding to the celebration, Flagstaff Academy has once again been named a 2025 Colorado Trailblazer School to Watch by the Colorado Association of Middle Level Education. This is the school’s third consecutive designation, following honors in 2019 and 2022. The national award recognizes schools that demonstrate excellence in academic achievement, developmental responsiveness, social equity, and strong organizational structures.
“As we celebrate our 20th year, this recognition reaffirms that Flagstaff Academy is not only a place with a proud past, but also a leader for the future,” Gustafson added. “We remain deeply committed to helping every student become a lifelong learner, critical thinker, and compassionate member of our global community.”
