Parent Guide: Supporting Students in Math at Home

Supporting a student's math journey at home is vital to their success in the classroom. Listed below are some tips on how to support your student at home.

HOMEWORK GUIDANCE
Encourage a routine for completing homework. Set aside a quiet, well-lit space where your child can focus without distractions. Offer guidance when needed keeping in mind that homework is intended to be independent practice of concepts they have already learned and practiced in school. If you are struggling with an assignment at home, please send it back with a note to the teacher so they know you attempted it. This will let them know that your child needs some reteaching of the material.  

ACCESSING CURRICULUM ONLINE
classlinkDid you know you can access the enVision 2.0 curriculum online through the Classlink portal? Links to Classlink are available on the Flagstaff Academy website on each grade level team page and teacher landing page. With enVision 2.0 online you will find a variety of supports to use at home, from reviewing the lesson of the day to “Another Look” homework videos that will help you help your child.

iREADY INSTRUCTION
Flagstaff Academy also offers access to iReady Instruction. This is an online tool that can also be found on Classlink. It takes student results from their most recent diagnostic assessment and provides lessons based on a student’s individual skill level and needs. The lessons are fun and interactive and can both fill in any gaps in skills as well as provide challenges. iReady offers students explicit instruction when they need it, along with systematic practice and scaffolded feedback that helps to promote a growth mindset. 

MATH FACTS MASTERY
Regular practice of math facts is crucial. It is important to know that the curriculum does not spend a lot of time on this important task. While our teachers do make some time for math facts practice at school your student will need extra practice at home to become fluent. Create fun and engaging ways to reinforce addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division facts. Games, flashcards, and digital resources can make this process enjoyable.

REAL WORLD APPLICATION
Encourage your child to explore real-world applications of math. This can be as simple as involving them in cooking and measuring ingredients or as complex as budgeting for a family activity. These experiences solidify the relevance of math in everyday life.

FOSTERING A POSITIVE ATTITUDE
Encourage a positive mindset towards math. Remind your child that everyone learns at their own pace, and mistakes are a natural part of the learning process. Celebrate their efforts and successes no matter how small.

OPEN COMMUNICATION

FLAGSTAFF ACADEMY MATH FESTIVAL
On Friday, Nov. 10, starting at 5:30 p.m. Flagstaff Academy is hosting a Family Math Night! In collaboration with the Julia Robinson Mathematics Festival, a group of Flagstaff Academy teachers are organizing a night of math fun for students and their families this fall.
