Career Exploration

Research shows that when students explore careers and create a plan to pursue that career prior to college and even prior to high school, starting in middle school, they have a higher rate of post secondary success. This means students have a  higher chance of graduating high school successfully (with good grades) and pursuing college/or meaningful careers.

In 2009 the state of Colorado mandated that all students in Colorado create Individual Career and Academic Plans (ICAP's) in response to having some of the lowest graduation rates in the country. ICAP is a multi-year process that all students engage in starting in sixth grade.  This process intentionally guides students and families in the exploration of career, academic and postsecondary opportunities. With the support of adults, students develop the awareness, knowledge, attitudes, and skills to create their own meaningful and powerful pathways to Postsecondary and Workforce Readiness (PWR).

At Flagstaff Academy our student use Naviance, a robust platform used to create Individual Career and Academic Plans for students.  It not only meets our state requirement but also provides access to thousands of resources for exploring colleges, careers and scholarships. It allows you to:

  • Get involved in the planning and advising process – Build a resume, complete online surveys, and manage timelines and deadlines for making decisions about colleges and careers
  • Research colleges – Compare GPA, standardized test scores, and other statistics to actual historical data from our school for students who have applied and been admitted in the past
  • Research careers – Research hundreds of careers and career clusters, and take career assessments
  • Create plans for the future – Create goals and to-dos, and complete tasks assigned to you by the school to better prepare yourself for your future college and career goals
