Flagstaff Academy Founding Families

Charter schools are created from the grass roots efforts of committed parents, educators and/or community leaders. Flagstaff Academy Founding Families are families who support the vision of Flagstaff Academy and who make a significant contribution to the school’s development prior to its opening and within the first year of operation. Founding Families will be honored for their contributions through a prominent display at the school. Generally, Founding Families have children that will attend Flagstaff Academy.

Founding Family volunteers are families who have volunteered a significant amount of their time and expertise in helping develop and operate the school. Founding Family volunteers may be offered preferred enrollment for their children (see below). Founding Family subscribers are families who make a financial gift of at least $2,000 to Flagstaff Academy prior to September 30, 2005. Founding Families may be both volunteers and subscribers. However, financial contributions will not be considered for preferred enrollment. All monetary and in-kind donations are tax-deductible. Regardless of form, all contributions will help us build an excellent school and are greatly appreciated.

How does a Founding Family get preferred enrollment?
Preferred enrollment will be granted to Founding Family volunteers based on the following defining attributes:

  • Duration of volunteerism;
  • Significant past and current contribution of time and effort (including: leadership, fundraising ability, expertise, etc.);
  • Significant commitment to contribute substantially to future work (in addition to the numerous tasks connected with opening the school, ‘future work’ specifically includes site development, facilities work and fundraising ability).

In the first three school years, Flagstaff Academy can offer preferred enrollment (guaranteed enrollment without going through the lottery process) to a maximum of 10% of the total student population. This preferred enrollment limit is set by the Colorado Department of Education, and as a public school receiving taxpayer funding, Flagstaff Academy must comply with this requirement. Founding Families and siblings of enrolled students are included in the 10% preferred enrollment and are offered preferred enrollment in priority order as listed above. The Flagstaff Academy Board determines Founding Family status for preferred enrollment each year prior to open enrollment. As a result of the 10% limitation, not all Founding Families can be guaranteed preferred enrollment. These families may enroll through the open enrollment lottery process. Financial contributions are not considered in granting preferred enrollment.
